Thursdays at 20:00 and Saturdays at 12:00 CEST, Q-Burn airs here – two hours of music picked by Peter „PA“ Antony. Several times a year he leaves the studio and takes the show onto a stage. On Friday 18 September he does it again, back at Hampton Sailing Club on the Thames.
Headlining is Brian Houston, billed on the poster as „The Irish Troubadour“. The Belfast man built his career the old-fashioned way: radio, record shops, touring. He has jammed with Robert Plant at „Whispering“ Bob Harris’s birthday party and opened for Van Morrison and Elvis Costello – Harris rates him among Britain’s great songwriters. His former bandmates in The Mighty Fall went on elsewhere: drummer Jonny Quinn to Snow Patrol, keyboard player Peter Wilson as Duke Special. He recorded, mixed and mastered his album „Belfast Troubadour“ himself; the singles „Shine“ and „Good Things“ were played on BBC Radio 2.
Special guest: Rocker Vince Ray. In rockabilly circles his name is better known from record sleeves than from stages. The lowbrow artist from Hastings draws flaming hot rods, skulls and guitars, customises instruments for Fender, and has worked for Gretsch, the Stray Cats and Reverend Horton Heat. In 2006 he formed the Boneshakers because he wanted a musical equivalent to his pictures – songs about femmes fatales, hot rod races and B-movie horror, played on a Gretsch with an upright bass behind it. These days he performs as a one-man band, playing everything himself on his album „Back in the Shack“.
Also on the bill: The Lawyer and the Draper, familiar faces from earlier nights on the Thames.
Hosting the evening is Peter „PA“ Antony himself. Anyone who knows his voice from our frequency can see him here rather than just hear him.
The venue does the rest. Hampton Sailing Club sits on an island in the Thames, reached only by chain ferry from Benn’s Alley off Thames Street. You cross a river to get to a gig.
