Saturday Night Special: Deep Space Night with Alex Rueger

He stood at the microphone when techno was still a foreign word on Munich radio, and he filled halls before most people knew what a rave was. On Saturday, 15 August, Alex Rueger joins us for a very special Saturday Night Special – and the name says it all: Deep Space Night.

Munich in the early nineties: the old Riem airport had just closed, and where planes once taxied, a new scene was taking off. Right in the middle of it: Alex Rueger, known to the scene as L.X.R. Together with Matthias Scheffel, he turned the Zeppelinhalle on the former airport grounds into one of the hotspots of Munich’s young rave culture – as resident, as MC, as promoter. The two had already made a name for themselves as the rap duo 2Erlei before they went on to shape the city’s party scene as a DJ and MC team.

In November 1996, the pair launched the club night that gives our special its name: the Deep Space Night. What started at the Babylon in Kunstpark Ost quickly grew into one of the biggest events for electronic music Munich had ever seen – week after week, up to 5,000 guests packed the halls at Ostbahnhof. When Kunstpark Ost closed its gates, the Deep Space Night simply moved on and kept going strong at Babylon 2 in the Georg-Elser-Hallen until 2008. Alongside all that, Rueger was a familiar voice on Munich radio – one of the presenters who dared to bring club culture on air at a time when no mainstream station would touch it.

Three decades of radio and nightlife, condensed into one evening: expect stories from the airport halls and the Kunstpark era, the tracks that defined those nights, and a guest who witnessed first-hand how Munich learned to rave.

On Saturday, 15 August from 8 p.m. in the Saturday Night Special on Feelgood FM.
