the morning show that wasn’t meant to happen

Senile Bettflucht

On weekdays from 6 to 9 a.m., a different alarm clock goes off at Feelgood FM: Matthias Matuschik (Matuschke for short) drags you out of bed with ‚Senile Bettflucht‘, the affectionately self-deprecating German phrase for waking up far too early in old age. What was meant to be a one-off birthday gift to the station for its first anniversary in March 2026 became, thanks to overwhelming listener response, a permanent fixture. Three hours of morning, three hours of Matuschke; and three good reasons to get up earlier than you actually have to.

You won’t find any breakfast-radio mush here, nor smooth voices gently easing you into the day. Instead: wide-awake music with substance. Sometimes upbeat, sometimes wilful, always handpicked. Between the songs, Matuschke serves up what only he can: razor-sharp takes on the day’s news, anecdotes from three decades of radio, small quarrels with the world, and the occasional espresso tip that keeps you awake without setting fire to your stomach. The show is live, without a script, without a safety net, and without any regard for whether you’re still half asleep. Oh, and on the matter of a certain Korean boy band: we agree in the morning, too. They still don’t get any airtime.

Matuschke is a radio personality of a kind rarely found today. Unmistakable, spontaneous, with a big mouth and an equally big heart. That he, of all people, took on the earliest shift of the day is a minor miracle, and proof that love for radio can outweigh love of sleep. Anyone who has heard him at the campfire in the evening knows: in the morning, he is no less awake, just differently so. Instead of embers, first rays of sun; instead of midnight philosophy, breakfast conversation with depth. The title of the show, by the way, was his own idea. Self-deprecation has never been his problem.

Senile Bettflucht is the self-deprecating answer to everything else morning radio gets up to. No weather every twelve minutes, no traffic bingo, no cheerful jingles trying to force you into optimism. Instead, a studio that’s wide awake while others are still looking for their first coffee, and a presenter who keeps you company through the bathroom, through breakfast and on the commute to the office, without anyone feeling pressured into being optimistic about it. The newspaper next to you (if you still remember what that is) is optional. The main thing is being there when Matuschke explains the day to the nation.

Feelgood FM brings you the only morning show you have ever needed: weekdays from 6 to 9 a.m. – live from the studio, straight into the bathroom, the kitchen, the car. Or under the duvet.
