One Year of Radio-WG: The Flat Share That Happens to Have a Studio

Some radio shows are born in meeting rooms, complete with a concept paper, an audience analysis and a name that three people had to sign off on.

The Radio-WG was born in the shower.

More precisely: in Matthias Döhla’s shower. Eighteen years a mayor of a village of 3,500 in Bavaria’s Hofer Land, before that a computer scientist, before that a youth radio co-operator, and a radio man throughout. In the summer of 2025 he stood in for our Matuschke together with Jürgen Beer — and somewhere between the shampoo and the towel, the idea appeared: what if a radio show were simply a flat share?

Station boss Willi Zwingmann liked it. The listeners liked it.

And this Monday, the flat share turns one.

Who lives here

Jürgen Beer brings the wide musical horizon and the philosophy of “50% fewer hits” — the treasures that never made it onto mainstream radio, even though they are wonderful to listen to.

Mike T. started his radio career at the age of twelve on Hessischer Rundfunk’s children’s radio, worked at AFN Frankfurt in the nineties and ran his own indie and alternative station for ten years. Psychedelic rock isn’t a phase for him, it’s a condition.

Matthias Döhla, known in the house simply as “the Mayor”, was already DJing in front of two thousand people before he started signing council paperwork.

And then there’s Patrick. According to flat share mythology, he lives in the basement. Whenever he comes upstairs, he brings the classics that make everyone say: “Right, that one was brilliant!”

What happened in twelve months

An idea turned into a fixed Monday night — and, along the way, into a whole series of episodes that ran considerably longer than planned:

  • 24 December 2025 — “Wir warten aufs Christkind”, three hours of Christmas Eve in the flat share
  • 8 February 2026 — four hours for Feelgood.fm’s first birthday
  • 16 February 2026 — the carnival party special
  • 30 March 2026 — the “Arschlange” special, almost five hours in one go
  • 4 May 2026 — Joschka the magician as a guest, on the radio, where you can’t see a thing

Musically, the flat share has wandered through pretty much everything that’s fun this year: 60s and 70s cult, indie, alternative, Neue Deutsche Welle, krautrock, soundtrack gems, pop, and the occasional detour into the stranger corners. The house rule still stands: if it’s good, it gets played.

Whether a given track counts as a classic or as a racket is, naturally, still up for debate. That’s part of flat share life.

Monday is the anniversary

On Monday 10 August from 20:00, the flat share celebrates one year on air — with Jürgen, Mike T., the Mayor, and Patrick, assuming he finds his way up from the basement.

Anyone who has been listening all year knows what to expect. For anyone who hasn’t: it’s rather like sitting at the kitchen table with the three of them while the songs play and the stories run alongside.

The kitchen is open. Bring your own drinks.
